History Meme: 2/5 Assassinations
- The Assassination of John Fitzgerald Kennedy
On November 22nd, 1963, John F. Kennedy was shot by a sniper in Dealy Plaza, Dallas Texas. A ten-month investigation in 1963–64 by the Warren Commission concluded that Kennedy was assassinated by Lee Harvey Oswald, acting alone.
However, the conclusions of the United States House Select Committee on Assassinations (HSCA) investigation that took place in 1978 found that the FBI report to be seriously flawed and believed that Kennedy’s assassination to be the result of a conspiracy. While they agreed with the Commission that Oswald fired all the shots which caused the wounds to Kennedy, the HSCA stated that there were at least four shots fired (only three of which could be linked to Oswald) and that there was “…a high probability that two gunmen fired at [the] President.”
Kennedy’s assassination is still subject of debate even 50 years later and has spawned numerous conspiracy theories and alternative scenarios.
